Privacy & cookies

This policy explains what information Student Eats collects when you use studenteats.co.uk, why we use it and the choices available to you.

About this policy

In this policy, “Student Eats”, “we”, “us” and “our” refer to the operator of this website. “You” means anyone who visits or contacts Student Eats. We process personal information in accordance with applicable UK data-protection law, including the UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018 and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR).

Information we collect

Email correspondence

If you email us, we receive your email address and any name, message or other information you choose to include. We use this information to respond to your enquiry and manage any follow-up correspondence. Student Eats does not currently operate a contact form.

Server and security logs

When you request a page, our hosting and security services may record technical information such as your IP address, the requested page, the date and time, referrer, browser, device, operating system and user-agent information. We use these logs to operate the website, diagnose errors, prevent abuse and protect its security. Routine logs are normally retained for no longer than one month, unless a longer period is needed to investigate an incident or meet a legal obligation.

Usage, advertising and consent information

Our advertising services may process information about pages viewed, approximate location derived from an IP address, browser or device details, ad interactions and your privacy choices. Cookie identifiers or similar technologies are used only where permitted and, where required, after you have made a choice through the consent message.

How and why we use information

Replying to enquiries

To take steps at your request and for our legitimate interest in answering messages sent to us.

Operating and securing the site

For our legitimate interests in providing a reliable website, preventing misuse and resolving technical problems.

Advertising and measurement

With consent where required, and otherwise only where another lawful basis and applicable cookie rules permit it.

Legal requirements

Where processing is necessary to comply with a legal obligation or establish, exercise or defend legal claims.

We keep personal information only for as long as it is reasonably needed for the purpose for which it was collected, including any legal, accounting or security requirements. Email correspondence may be retained while an enquiry remains active and for a reasonable period afterwards.

Advertising

Student Eats uses Google AdSense to fund the website. Google and its advertising partners may use cookies or similar technologies to deliver, limit, secure and measure advertisements. Depending on your choice and location, adverts may be personalised or based only on contextual information such as the page topic and your general location.

Where required, Google’s consent-management platform asks you to accept, reject or manage advertising purposes and providers before relevant technologies are used. The message contains the current list of participating advertising providers and lets you revisit your choices.

Turning off personalised advertising does not necessarily remove advertisements. You may still see non-personalised or contextual ads.

Cookies and similar technologies

Cookies are small text files stored by your browser. Similar technologies can store or read information on your device. They may be set by Student Eats or by services used on the website.

Managing cookies

You can use the choices presented by our consent message and your browser settings to delete or block cookies. Blocking strictly necessary storage or all cookies may cause some features to work incorrectly. Your browser’s help pages explain how to manage cookies; independent guidance is also available from the Information Commissioner’s Office.

Sharing and international transfers

We may share information with:

  • hosting, security and technical service providers that help operate Student Eats;
  • Google and advertising providers selected through the consent-management platform;
  • professional advisers or authorities where disclosure is required by law; and
  • a successor if the website or its business is reorganised or transferred.

Some providers may process information outside the UK. Where data-protection law requires it, the relevant provider must use an approved transfer mechanism or another valid safeguard. Third-party providers are responsible for their own processing as described in their privacy notices.

Your data-protection rights

Depending on the circumstances, you may have the right to:

  • ask for a copy of personal information we hold about you;
  • ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete information;
  • ask us to erase or restrict the use of your information;
  • object to processing based on legitimate interests;
  • receive certain information in a portable format; and
  • withdraw consent at any time, without affecting earlier lawful processing.

To exercise a right, email us using the address below. We may need to confirm your identity before responding. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office.

Student Eats links to third-party websites and may embed content provided by other services. We do not control their security or privacy practices. When you follow an external link, the third party’s own privacy policy applies.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy when the website, our providers or applicable rules change. The latest version will always be published on this page with its revision date.
